As part of our Restorative Approach to behaviour we have a group of year 6 pupils who have been trained as Peer Mediators. They are available in both playgrounds (wearing blue sashes for easy identification) during lunchtimes and offer children an alternative way to solve friendship and play arguments. The Peer Mediators support other children in conflict by helping them listen to, and understand, each other’s story and then enabling them find their own solution and way forward. This not only resolves the immediate situation but teaches the children skills that can be used to help with future conflicts.
Here’s what two of our current Peer Mediators have to say about their role:
“I became a Peer Mediator because I had problems of my own and wanted to sort them out.” – Rohan
“I became a Peer Mediator because I saw some problems in the playground” – Seamus
We think it is good because it is private and will stay between the Peer Mediators and you.
